These three songs are the first steps into Varfalvy’s complex universe.

In what he describes as “New New-Age” or “Industrial new-age downtempo”, Varfalvy explores the sound and instruments of his origins. “I like to use natural sounds and process them in artificial ways” he says. “Like using the classic 808 Hi-Hat beat repeat technique on a bouzouki VST for example”.

“I mostly draw inspiration from my mother. Her art is embedded in the esoteric realm — a cosmos full of angels, crystals and spiritual artifacts. She even paints UFOs! So I grew up surrounded by balkan new-age art. I remember hating it because I was a gothic teenager and I had to play along with that narrative. I think we all do it when we are kids. After all, some adults are still struggling with their outdated avatar. But as I grew older I couldn’t deny how strongly my mom’s music resonated in me. It was the sound of my mom’s infinite love, how could I possibly hate it? So I had to make that other inner voice shine, it was relevant and fundamental to my identity and its existence was undeniable. This EP is an attempt to reconcile different facets of my core self and to introduce myself to my audience with clarity and immediacy.”.

Air (It’s ok)
In the first song called AIR, Varfalvy delivers a static vocal performance. “I didn’t know what to sing at first. Why should someone listen to me? But I’ve been hosting tarot nights in Montreal for 2 years now and I realized that I did readings for roughly 2000 people. So I thought about them and the common struggles they all face as humans. I imagined gathering all their souls in one person, who would be my interlocutor in the song AIR.” Varfalvy is an Air sign (Libra). Air signs are said to be everywhere and nowhere at the same time, like Varfalvy’s voice. “Don’t get me wrong, Tarot is medieval psychology. At least it's my take on it. It’s a kind of healing performance art. Nothing magical. I don’t believe in magic. But I genuinely hope I can somehow help people feel better about themselves.”

More Air (Hussar)
The second song called MORE AIR, is a tribute to his grandfather Lajos Varfalvy who used to be a Hussar (Hungarian elite chevalerie) before becoming one of the leaders in the 1956 Hungarian revolution. He was also a spy bridging Hungary with other countries who financed and fueled this revolution. “So the sword is one of the 4 suits in tarot. When I think of my grandfather riding a horse, I immediately see the Knight of Swords card. The knight of swords is also an Air sign in tarot. Swords characters are idealistic, fearless, they have pure intentions and they don’t care about the consequences of their acts. They just charge. I basically did that song for myself. I like to go on long walks, step on those bpm and feel like I’m invincible like my grandfather. I hope this song gives you courage in hard times.”

Requiem for earth
The third and fourth songs together are called Requiem for earth. The description is in the title. “I mourn for our planet but I also celebrate life as I try to translate that moving sense of awe that I get when I contemplate the immensity of nature.”
